Explained: How Rob Edwards' Wolves sacking unfolded

Rob Edwards was plotting Wolves’ next moves on Wednesday evening, yet by late that night his reign had effectively ended. He was sacked by phone on Thursday morning.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, he kept planning from a holiday abroad after helping land Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez. He had built a strong bond with Andre that aided the midfielder’s new contract, and some supporters had begun to credit him.

While he planned, Nathan Shi had Jorge Mendes and Valdir Cardoso negotiating for Cesar Peixoto to take over. Edwards first learned of it via social media, which was initially denied.

The abrupt switch blindsided senior staff and became clear only once public. Edwards fronted club media around the Trippier and Jimenez deals, including quotes and a Tuesday night video, content that would not have featured him had a change been imminent.

The timing is bizarre and the handling even more baffling. Wolves had started the window well and appeared to have a plan with sporting director Matt Jackson.

The club now faces uncertainty over what comes next. Internally, many staff are bemused, with some angry at the process and a lack of transparency.

Few inside the organisation, including figures at the very top, saw it coming. Mendes had pushed other managers earlier in the season and Shi had weighed alternatives.

Even so, the expectation had been that Edwards would continue after private reassurances from Shi. That underpins the shock as Wolves are set to back a completely unproven Mendes client instead.
