Southampton have come across an eye-opening figure that indicates that the Saints have only themselves to blame for their Premier League downfall.
Following a disappointing two-month timeframe, Southampton have finally let go of their losing ways. For other Premier League clubs, this isn't any worthy distinction but it indeed counts atleast for the Saints.
Now, I know yesterday's eve rightfully called for a grand celebration but the fans have now become accustomed to these heartbreaking last-minute goals. Be it against Ipswich at home or a Leicester City fumble, the St. Mary's has witnessed their fair share of Premier League agony.
In fact, these sufferings have been as prominent as the usual sights of a three-goal result. And these scenarios expand even further if Southampton take their rare leads into account that eventually ended in vain.
Sticking to this reality, the Daily Echo have reflected that the Saints have parted ways with a mammoth 25 points due to their lethargic habits while closing out the game.
Acknowledging these terrible season metrics, there's another eye-opening takeaway for the fans. It's that the staring relegation clouds could have been dismissed if all of those points were courageously defended.
Simply add 25 to the existing ten and Southampton may have been enjoying their journey to reach the 40-point finish line. Knowing how the relegation battles have narrowed in recent years, this tally is one to proudly boast in front of the bottom-table neighbours.
Yet, only imagining doesn't have many benefits compared to the sheer repentance it brings. Talking about the entire squad, they don't have enough matchday gap to lament previous errors nor blame their seemingly absent luck factor.
Hence, a good response will be needed come the end of the week. Will we see that mindset from the Saints there, let's wait to find out.
