Goalkeeper could face disciplinary action

FA open investigation into Aston Villa star over betting promotion
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez could face FA action after promoting Argentine betting company.
Emiliano Martinez goalkeeper of Aston Villa may face disciplinary action from the Football Association after appearing in promotional content for Argentine betting company.
According to The Athletic, the FA is aware of the situation and is reviewing whether the promotion breaks its rules. English football regulations strictly forbid players from advertising betting companies especially activities that could influence or be linked to competitions they play in.
Martinez reportedly worked with the Argentine betting company bplay since 2023, with the brand presenting him as one of its ambassadors. The company is also known as official sponsor of the Argentine professional league.
In its promotional campaign, bplay highlighted Martinez as symbol of Argentine football culture. The campaign message stressed the growth of the betting market while also mentioning that gambling should be limited to people over 18 year old.
The company used Martinez’s image across social media platforms alongside other Argentine sports figures including Angel Di Maria and former tennis player Diego Schwartzman.
If the FA decides that the promotion breaks its regulations, Martinez could face penalties similar to those imposed in past cases. In 2019, Yerry Mina fined £10,000 after appearing in a betting advertisement while playing for Everton.
FA rules prevent players from directly promoting betting businesses even though betting companies are still allowed as team sponsors in English football.
