Fabio, 45, sets new Copa Libertadores appearance record

Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio, 45, became the Copa Libertadores' record appearance maker on Wednesday, his side drawing 1-1 with Argentina's CSI Rivadavia.
The outing was his 114th in the competition, surpassing Ever Hugo Almeida, who had held the record since 1990. According to L'Équipe, Fabio has featured in 13 editions with Vasco de Gama, Cruzeiro and Fluminense.
He played one with Vasco de Gama, eight with Cruzeiro and four with Fluminense, lifting one trophy in 2023 with Fluminense. He made his Libertadores debut in 2001.
Since August 2025 he has also held the all-time appearance record in football, having surpassed England goalkeeper Peter Shilton's 1,391 games.
A regular starter and captain for the Rio de Janeiro club, he is the oldest player to appear in the Libertadores since the tournament began in 1960. Born in Nobres, Mato Grosso, he started his career in 1997 and has been a professional for 29 seasons.
