Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool are in talks with world-class attacker

Liverpool are in talks with a world-class attacker according to Fabrizio Romano.

Liverpool’s situation in the transfer market this summer points to a structural issue rather than a purely cosmetic one, with wide attacking areas emerging as a key weakness that requires urgent attention.

The most significant factor is the impending loss of Mohamed Salah, who has functioned as both a primary chance creator and a high-volume scorer from the right flank over multiple seasons.

His output has not only defined Liverpool’s attacking ceiling but also stabilised their chance creation patterns, particularly in transition and right-sided overloads. Replacing that level of production is inherently difficult, and it exposes the lack of a pre-existing succession plan.

However, the issue predates his departure. Even during Salah’s final seasons, Liverpool’s wide depth profile showed imbalance, particularly after the sale of Luis Díaz without a like-for-like replacement. That decision reduced rotational flexibility and increased reliance on players operating outside their natural wide roles.

Across the campaign, this has manifested in a greater frequency of positional improvisation whenever Salah or Cody Gakpo were unavailable.

The tactical consequence has been a reduced ability to stretch opposition back lines consistently, limiting the team’s width in possession phases.

From a performance perspective, this structural deficiency has contributed to a more predictable attacking profile.

Opponents have been able to maintain compact mid-block structures with reduced risk, as Liverpool have lacked consistent wide threats capable of isolating full-backs or generating repeated 1v1 situations.

The net effect is a decline in spatial disruption, with attacks becoming more congested centrally and less varied in their entry points.

This reinforces the need for Liverpool to prioritise multiple wide signings rather than a single replacement profile, ensuring both depth and tactical diversity are restored in the next phase of squad planning.

But the club's first priority will absolutely be to sign a replacement for Salah. The Egyptian's shoes will have to be filled somehow.

And it's what the Reds appear to be working on early in the transfer window.

When it comes to strengthening the wings, there is one standout candidate who fits that profile perfectly. Better still, he seemingly prefers a move to Anfield.

Yan Diomande is the only world-class right-winger available on the market this summer. His numbers are astonishingly good, and his underlying numbers are even better. He's up there among the very elite players.

He may not be a blockbuster name like Wirtz and Isak, but he has the potential to be one of the best players in the world.

According to Ekrem Konur, he prefers a move to Anfield this summer over Paris Saint Germain.

We are talking about a PSG side that just won the Champions League twice in a row. Yet Diomande prefers a move to Liverpool.

That is incredibly exciting.

And Fabrizio Romano has just confirmed that Liverpool are also in talks to sign the Ivorian this summer. Although so are Paris Saint Germain.
