Fabrizio Romano sheds some light on the situation revolving around Manchester United outcast Alejandro Garnacho and the rumours linking him to Napoli.

The 21-year-old had made his big breakthrough with the first team under Erik ten Hag, but shared a frosty relationship with Ruben Amorim from the get-go. In fact, the Portuguese tactician had omitted Garnacho from his squad alongside Marcus Rashford ahead of the Manchester derby in December.

Unlike his English teammate, the Argentinian was swiftly restored to the squad, but never truly thrived under Amorim. The situation reached a head in the Europa League final when the young winger was dropped from the starting lineup, and retaliated with a fiery post-match interview.

In recent weeks, it has been reported that Napoli have rekindled their interest in the player. The Italian champions had already tried to sign the Argentina international in January after selling Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to PSG, but couldn’t find an agreement with Man Utd.

On Thursday morning, The Mirror (via TuttoMercatoWeb) claimed that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has expressed his desire to sign the player.

“Away from United, he would be twice stronger,”  allegedly said the club patron who bought Scott McTominay from the Red Devils last summer.

However, Fabrizio Romano denied the whole story, insisting that De Laurentiis never made these quotes.

Napoli not working on signing Alejandro Garnacho

The Italian journalist reveals that Napoli aren’t trying to sign Garnacho, at least not at this stage of the summer.

Therefore, the Argentine’s future remains shrouded in mystery, as Man Utd have yet to find a suitor who is willing to splash the cash on the young star.

Nevertheless, we can expect several clubs to enquire about the player’s services in the coming weeks, especially when INEOS become increasingly desperate to offload him, and thus willing to lower their asking price.
