Leeds United are expected to complete the signing of Sassuolo defender Tarik Muharemović for about £34million, leaving Sunderland likely to miss out.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Leeds are set to land the 23-year-old in a €40million agreement, with final details being resolved, while Fabrizio Romano signalled progress with his "here we go" post.

Sunderland and Bournemouth had registered interest, but Leeds are understood to have offered the biggest fee and the strongest salary package.

The move is anticipated to be worth roughly £34million. Sassuolo are due around half, with Juventus entitled to the remaining 50 per cent via a sell-on from his Turin exit.

Leeds’ need to reinforce at centre-back after Pascal Struijk’s departure has driven the push, despite Sunderland being able to offer Europa League football.

With Régis Le Bris already stocked with senior centre-backs, Sunderland have kept discipline rather than matching a package beyond £30million and will now pursue alternative defensive targets.

Leeds are aiming to finalise the outstanding formalities before Muharemović completes his switch to Elland Road.
