Manchester United have made “contact” with Serie A side Torino over a move for Serbian international Vanja Milinkovic-Savic this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford has been a source of acute concern for Ruben Amorim this season.
First-choice option Andre Onana has endured a dismal campaign with a catalogue of errors since Amorim swapped Lisbon for Manchester in November, most notably in the first leg of the Europa quarter-final clash with Lyon.
Interestingly, the Cameroonian shot stopper began the season in excellent form under Erik ten Hag, though the rest of the team did not match this level and the Dutchman was dismissed in October. Onana’s form quickly declined to mirror his teammates once Amorim arrived, however.
Number two goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has looked equally unconvincing when deputising for Onana and the Turkish international continues to be linked with an exit from Old Trafford in search of more first-team minutes after United received enquiries in January.
Consequently, a new goalkeeper has quickly emerged as essential in recent months when it had initially appeared lower down the list of priorities this summer.
There is a desperate need for upgrades in the frontline with United’s ineffective attack the primary reason why the team are languished in 15th in the Premier League table. Further investment may also come in central midfield and the wing-back position, requiring a considerable budget to fund this comprehensive overhaul.
Which is why United may be forced to settle for a cheaper option in goal this summer as the club’s executive branch prioritises reinforcements further up the pitch.
Espanyol’s Joan Garcia has been strongly linked with a move after enjoying an impressive season in La Liga, as his contract contains a release clause worth between £20-25 million.
However, there is considerable interest in Garcia with a host of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, rivalling United for the 24-year-old goalkeeper.
As such, the Red Devils are keeping their options open and have added Torino number one Milinkovic-Savic to their shortlist according to Romano, as a potential alternative to Garcia.
Tweet: “Excl: Manchester United have added Vanja Milinković-Savić to their shortlist for new goalkeeper. Initial contacts took place for Torino GK among candidates for next season, waiting on price tag and more.”
The Italian transfer guru reveals United officials have made “initial contacts” to explore a deal for the Serbian goalkeeper who has enjoyed a “fantastic season” for Torino, with his leadership a particular source of praise by Romano.
The 28-year-old would be “keen on the move” to Old Trafford with his 6’8 frame making the return to the rigours of English football – having previously been a United youth player – a walk in the park for the imposing Serb.
