Facts: Borussia's 95% success rate

The scenario: Borussia Dortmund won the first leg 2-0 thanks to goals from Serhou Guirassy and Maximilian Beier. A win, a draw or a narrow defeat by one goal will be enough for BVB to advance to the round of 16, where they will face either Arsenal or Bayern Munich (draw on 27 February) on 10 or 11 March in Dortmund and on 17 or 18 March (away). If BVB lose by exactly two goals, there will be extra time and, if the scores are still level after extra time, a penalty shoot-out.

Home/away: Atalanta have yet to win at home against a German team by two or more goals. They have won 3-2 against Leverkusen (2022) and 1-0 against Köln (1990), drawn 1-1 against BVB (2018), and lost 1-2 at home to Bochum (1978) and 0-2 to Leipzig (2022). This season in the Champions League, the Italians won at home against Chelsea and Bruges (2-1 each), drew against Prague (0-0) and lost to Bilbao (2-3). BVB have won seven of their last 16 away games in the UEFA Champions League (three draws, six defeats), but lost the last two (Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur). Their record in their last three away games in Italy is balanced: 4-4 at Juventus, 1-2 at FC Bologna, 3-1 at AC Milan.

Knockout record: A victory in the first leg by two or more goals – whether at home or away – has been enough for Borussia Dortmund to advance to the next round of a European cup competition 19 times out of 20. December 1987 was the only time it was not enough, when a 3-0 win in the first leg at the Westfalenstadion was followed by a 5-0 defeat after extra time in Bruges. BVB beat an Italian club for the first time in 1993 when they beat AS Roma in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. Since then, their knockout record against Serie A teams has been even (4-4). Atalanta have never come back from a two-goal deficit from the first leg in their European history. Their record against German clubs is balanced as they have advanced twice and been eliminated twice (most recently in 2022 against Leipzig).

Previous matches: Borussia Dortmund and Atalanta faced each other exactly eight years ago in the round of 32 of the 2017/2018 UEFA Europa League. In the first leg, at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, BVB came from behind to win 3-2 thanks to goals from Michy Batshuayi (65th/90+1). In the return leg in Reggio Emilia, Marcel Schmelzer poked the ball over the line in the 83rd minute to make it 1-1 and secure BVB's fortunate progression to the next round.Compiled by Boris Rupert
