Liverpool have a golden opportunity to sign their South American saviour. The Reds need a new winger - here's an ideal one.
Mohamed Salah’s exit creates a void in Liverpool’s team. They desperately need a new wide player who can fill it and their top target was Yan Diomande.
Only, Diomande has picked Paris Saint-Germain, leaving Liverpool to flounder in a sub-par market. It’s difficult to see any real value for money right now as the elite players are untouchable and everyone below that level is a mix of expensive and unproven.
Yankuba Minteh is a great talent and clearly boasts wonderful potential but he’s also pretty unproven at 21. His numbers didn’t quite match what Salah produced in his sub-par final season.
He’d also be incredibly expensive coming from Brighton.
And that’s why we think Liverpool should look outside the box. Specifically, they should eye Matias Soule at AS Roma, an Argentine 23-year-old who might be on the brink of exploding into something special.
Soule, who can play from the right or in attacking midfield, scored six and assisted another five for Roma last season. That’s 21 goals and 13 assists across the last three seasons from someone who only turned 23 in April.
Moreover, Soule has operated as part of a twin attacking midfield partnership behind a striker in a 3-4-2-1 formation. While we’re not certain Andoni Iraola will want a similar system, it’s notable that this is the same position Florian Wirtz took up for Bayer Leverkusen.

Only, Soule plays on the right of it, whereas Wirtz preferred the left. It suggests there’s a natural partnership there if Liverpool would want it.
And as the Argentine prefers to drift inside and roam a bit, he would open the door for an overlapping wing-back. That’s music to the ears of anyone hoping Jeremie Frimpong can still do a job on that flank. Soule should be a more natural fit for the Dutchman as a partnership.
To top it off, Soule has one of the highest rates for winning possession back in the attacking third among right-wingers. That’s ultimately a skill that Iraola will want in his high-pressing side.
Roma are happy to sell this summer, with Gazzetta dello Sport suggesting a €40m bid would get Soule. To us, he looks like a productive option who could move up a level immediately in the right environment - especially with a lower burden to create, surrounded by top players.
The Italians are a side with a decent eye for players at the moment, having quickly signed and developed Neil El Aynaoui. El Aynaoui, whose dad was 27th seed at Wimbledon in 2003 and lost in the 3rd round to Andre Agassi, is another who could take a step up this summer.
That’s €40m price is the kind of price Liverpool should be paying, too, as they move into a market lower than the one for Diomande. Soule could be a one-season tide-over with the potential to be a proper star.
And a risk worth taking, for us.
