Football League World's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit weighs in on links between the Hillsborough club and Leicester City forward Tom Cannon
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Sheffield Wednesday are one of the Championship clubs vying for striker Tom Cannon's signature, in the event that his parent club Leicester City recall him from his current loan spell with Stoke City.
That's according to Alan Nixon, who revealed on Sunday that both the Owls and fellow second tier outfit Luton Town were keen on the forward.
Meanwhile, in late December, journalist Darren Witcoop reported via X that Wednesday's Steel City rivals Sheffield United were also intent on making a swoop for the 22-year-old.
Football League World asked our Owls fan pundit, Patrick McKenna, if Cannon would be a dream addition for Danny Rohl's side given the club's lack of goals from strikers, and if he could see the deal happening given Wednesday and Stoke's respective positions in the Championship table.
Patrick said: "In regards to Tom Cannon, I would agree that our strikers haven't been prolific this season, and another striker certainly would not be a bad thing, especially with Ike Ugbo completely flopping this season.
"But the area that really needs the most urgent surgery is defence.
"But Tom Cannon has proven himself in the Championship, that he can regularly score goals, so if we manage to get him in on loan, yeah, he would be a good, solid addition to the team, and I could see him having a positive impact in the second half of the season.
"Dare I say it, almost like Ugbo coming in last season, added on a few additional goals which proved very crucial in the end, and can I see us going in for him?
"Well, right now, we have to look at how the situation is playing out.
"Danny Rohl is quite publicly showing his frustrations that there's been no communication with (owner Dejphon) Chansiri, and, subsequently, a lack of direction on maybe who he can get in, or what the funds are and at the general direction.
"Because, yeah, it'd be all well and good, Danny Rohl identifying targets, if he doesn't know his budget, or if he has to go to Chansiri individually, kind of begging for money.
"So, right now, I'm fearful that the sort of signing like Tom Cannon isn't going to happen.
"Danny Rohl did hint that we'd get more answers on the loan situation at the fans' forum on the 15th of January.
"With that, I kind of fear that's just going to be another rant by Chansiri saying there's no money, and somehow it's the fans' fault.
"So, yeah, right now, Tom Cannon, I would take him, but I'm not even sure that we're going to get in a few loans in January, like we did last season with (Ian) Poveda, (James) Beadle and Ugbo, and we could be looking at a situation (like) in our last season in League One."
As alluded to by Patrick, the Owls seem unlikely to be overly busy during the current transfer window, due to the ongoing ownership of Chansiri, who has not historically allowed the club to bring in many players in January.
In fact, as per the Sheffield Star, the South Yorkshire outfit made just six new signings during the winter windows between 2021 and 2023, although, interestingly, four of those additions arrived last campaign, when Rohl and co were fighting against relegation.
This time around, though, the Owls do not seem to be in any relegation trouble, and supporters will be eyeing up the play-off places, with Wednesday sitting just three points below the top-six.
But that lack of jeopardy regarding the bottom three may mean that Chansiri is less willing to spend during the current transfer window than this time last year.
However, if the Owls are able to bring in Cannon, he would be an excellent addition who has notched nine goals in 22 league appearances for a Stoke side who sit just four points above the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Wednesday forward Ugbo, who has led the line for his side during both of their last two Championship fixtures, has failed to score in 24 second tier outings, and missed a penalty during a dramatic 2-2 draw with Millwall on Saturday.
