One thing FC Barcelona have done since the arrival of Hansi Flick is maintain a low profile in the media, especially when it comes to speaking about refereeing in La Liga. The German manager has been insistent that it should not be a factor.

However, last night’s refereeing display from Gil Manzano and company seems to have ruffled feathers in the Barcelona camp. After the game, both Frenkie de Jong and Hansi Flick hit out at some of the decisions on the night.

One of the biggest talking points at the Reale Arena in Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat to Real Sociedad was Lamine Yamal’s ruled-out goal for a supposed offside that did not seem evident on subsequent replays.

After the game, as revealed by Mundo Deportivo, Fermin Lopez posted an Instagram story showing the offside call with several laughing-with-tears emojis. The image speaks for itself.

Fermin Lopez also posted several photos with a message that read like a dressing-room statement after last night. It read:

“Proud of my team, they won’t be able to beat us. Visca Barça!”

This was the second time in successive seasons that Barcelona have had a goal seemingly wrongly ruled out for offside by the same refereeing team. Call it a coincidence, call it deja vu, but we call it a pattern.

FC Barcelona have every right to feel aggrieved by the call, as the game might have played out differently had the goal been given in their favour. Instead, Hansi Flick’s men now see their lead at the top reduced to just one point.

It is a shame to see such blatant refereeing calls against one particular team in the league, and if La Liga wants to rise to the level of the Premier League, this is the first place to start among the many issues it needs to address.

That said, we do not expect any changes, and Barcelona should be prepared for more such situations in the coming months.
