Several important developments are currently taking place at FC Barcelona, and one of the most significant among them is the ongoing renovation of the Spotify Camp Nou.
The Blaugrana home has been undergoing these renovations for quite some time now, and is now in the process of reaching its several milestones after having been opened for the spectators some months ago.
The latest development in this process was the recent visit of a delegation from FIFA, which has begun inspecting potential venues for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The tournament is set to be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, and the inspection tour forms part of the governing body’s early evaluation of stadiums across the three nations.
The Camp Nou was the first stop in the team’s tour, and according to Mundo Deportivo, they left with very positive impressions of the stadium, which is expected to host one of the semi-finals, and could also be a contender for the final, with Santiago Bernabeu and Grand Stade Hassan II stadium being the favorites.
After concluding their visit to Camp Nou, the delegation also inspected the RCDE Stadium, another venue in the city that could potentially host matches during the tournament. The tour will now continue across several other candidate venues in Spain.
The delegation is scheduled to visit stadiums in Zaragoza and will later travel to Madrid to inspect both the Santiago Bernabeu and the Metropolitano Stadium. Meetings with representatives of the Spanish government, regional authorities, and local organisers are also planned as part of the preparation process for the global event.
Following the Spanish leg of the trip, FIFA officials will travel to Portugal before returning to Spain the following week to continue inspections in cities such as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Seville, Bilbao, San Sebastian, and A Coruna. Meanwhile, Malaga has already withdrawn from the race to host matches, while other cities like Vigo and Valencia could still emerge as possible candidates.
This current tour is considered an initial evaluation phase for FIFA as preparations for the 2030 World Cup gradually begin. The governing body is not expected to make any final decisions at this stage, with more definitive conclusions likely to be drawn after the delegation returns to Zurich and after further assessments following the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
For now, the positive feedback from FIFA represents encouraging news for Barcelona supporters, as the club’s iconic stadium continues to move closer to becoming one of the key venues for one of football’s biggest events.
