FIFA ‘opens’ Argentina investigation after World Cup brawl involving Paredes, Molina and Ayala | OneFootball

According to Sky Sports, FIFA has opened an investigation into Argentina's conduct after the mass brawl that followed the World Cup final. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to claim a second world title.

The flashpoint came after full time when Nahuel Molina struck Rodri in the stomach as the Spain midfielder sprinted from the bench to celebrate. Rodri confronted the Argentina full-back, and seconds later a mass melee erupted.

During the scuffle Eric Garcia tried to calm matters, but Leandro Paredes grabbed him by the neck. Gavi stepped in to help his team-mate and was knocked to the ground several times by Thiago Almada and Paredes. Paredes was shown a red card after the match.

The probe will also cover the actions of Roberto Ayala, Lionel Scaloni's assistant, with cameras capturing the former centre-back aiming a punch at Dani Olmo.

FIFA will review footage, the referee's report and other documentation before delivering a verdict. It is also examining the conduct of several members of Argentina's delegation during the trophy ceremony, after they stood with their backs turned as Spain lifted the World Cup. No possible sanctions have been announced.
