According to BBC Sport, FIFA is seeking an explanation from video assistant referee Shaun Evans after a hand gesture caught on camera before Germany’s 7-1 win over Curaçao.
During a live cut to the VAR room on Sunday, the Australian official, 38, was shown with his arm by his side, then forming an upside-down OK sign with his right hand.
The gesture can be read in two ways, the report said, either innocuous or associated with white supremacy.
The clip prompted heavy online speculation. FIFA has not yet issued an official response or explanation.
Others online framed it as a childhood game, where a person makes the circle sign by their hip to trick onlookers into looking at it.
