FIFA announced on Friday a new pre-match ceremony for the 2026 World Cup in which starters and substitutes from both teams will gather around the centre circle for the national anthems.

The concept is designed to involve every player so they can share the emotion and pride of representing their country on the biggest stage.

With squad lists set at 26, up to 52 players could be in the middle of the pitch before kick-off.

The presentation will also feature giant banners in each team’s national colours, aiming to give supporters a clear view of the ceremony from any seat.

As players and match officials face one another, the format is intended to create a moment of unity, pride and emotion for teams and spectators.

The ceremony is expected to evolve through the competition, with coloured smoke or pyrotechnic effects planned for the knockout stage.
