Filipe Luís is no longer Flamengo head coach. The news arrived soon after the 8-0 win over Madureira in the Carioca semi-final, and he was caught off guard after his Maracanã press conference.
According to Globo.com, no justification was offered, he had not been warned, and the call was set before kick-off. José Boto delivered the news in a brief meeting, and with the squad already gone he is expected to visit Ninho do Urubu to say goodbye.
The move was ordered by president Bap, who asked Boto to meet the coach, with the board already weighing action after poor early-season results. Dissatisfied with performances, he had issued firmer demands to staff and players.
Flamengo have not named who will lead Sunday’s Carioca final against Fluminense, aiming to appoint by then. Leonardo Jardim is a leading option, having been on Bap’s radar late last year, and the former Cruzeiro coach is in Brazil.
This process strained relations. Although he renewed until 2027, ties between Filipe Luís, Bap and Boto became more delicate, with the football director growing distant this year.
Filipe Luís began coaching Flamengo’s under-17s in March 2024 after retiring, winning the Copa Rio, then the under-20 world title in June. Promoted on 30 September to replace Tite, he won the Copa do Brasil in 2024 and in 2025 added the Supercopa do Brasil, Carioca and Libertadores, before an Intercontinental final shootout loss to PSG.
This year form dipped, with physical and technical issues and dressing-room discontent and scrutiny.
