Flamengo sacked head coach Filipe Luís hours after an 8-0 win over Madureira that secured a place in the Carioca final. The overnight decision on Tuesday 3 March surprised him and supporters, although internally the move had been building. According to Coluna Do Fla, director of football José Boto carried it out following a call from club president Bap.
The relationship between Filipe Luís and Bap had begun to fray in December 2025 amid a protracted contract renewal. A disputed early return for the senior squad in 2026 added to tensions, and poor on‑pitch form made the situation increasingly hard to sustain.
Bap had wanted to act after the Recopa Sudamericana defeat to Lanús of Argentina on Thursday 26, but with no successor lined up the club delayed. He had also considered removing the coach before January’s clássico against Vasco following changes to the 2026 plan.
Filipe Luís viewed Bap’s call as direct interference in his work, while the president disliked being exposed in explanations to the squad and the subsequent leaks to the media. With runners‑up finishes in the Supercopa do Brasil and Recopa adding to the strain, Bap phoned to demand his dismissal after that match. Shortly after the press conference, the coach was told he would not continue.
He departs with a strong record, having won the Copa do Brasil in 2024, then the Carioca and the Copa Libertadores in 2025. Flamengo are now racing to appoint a successor, with Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim, who led Cruzeiro in 2025, regarded as the frontrunner.
