Mohamed Salah on Sunday will play his last-ever match for Liverpool.
The Egyptian King is leaving one year ahead of schedule - after reaching an agreement with sporting director Richard Hughes to rip up his £400k per week contract.
Focus will now turn to which player can come into Anfield in order to replace one of Liverpool’s finest players in history. There have been links with Bradley Barcola and Yan Diomande - among others.
It’s now clear that Jarrod Bowen is featuring heavily in the club’s thinking. Bowen, 29, looks set to be relegated with West Ham United come Sunday.
The England international has been a consistent force for the Hammers since joining from Hull City back in 2020. He has been doing it once again this season in an underperforming team - scoring eight goals and grabbing 10 assists.
The left-footer has long been on Liverpool’s radar as a potential Salah replacement. And according to a report in the Guardian Bowen could now be moving closer to an Anfield move.
West Ham will require major sales if they are relegated - and even if they stay up a top performer like Bowen could be sacrificed.
“Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in Jarrod Bowen as rival clubs prepare to capitalise on West Ham’s financial problems by targeting their best players,” the report reads.
“West Ham will need to raise more than £100m if relegated from the Premier League and there is growing interest in Bowen from a host of top sides.
“Liverpool have long been admirers of Bowen and could target him as they look to boost their forward options.
“It is unclear how much West Ham would want for Bowen, whose contract does not expire until 2030, but they will be under extreme pressure to make sales if relegation is confirmed this week.
“West Ham made a £104.2m loss in the last financial year and will need to make sales even if they stay up.”
So this looks like a sensible deal for a robust, Premier League-proven talent. Bowen could come into the lineup and do a job immediately - requiring no acclimatisation to the English top flight.
Although his age is a little outside the range of players that FSG usually go for he has enough quality and experience to hit the ground running - having scored 84 times for the Irons.
Rather than waiting for a player like Diomande or Barcola to flourish the outgoing Premier League champions would be getting a good stylistic match - and a leader in attack.
