With just six months until the 2026 World Cup kicks off across three nations, fan excitement is being tempered by a mounting controversy over affordability. Following a wave of backlash, FIFA has been forced into a significant course correction on its ticketing strategy.

The initial ticket prices, which sparked widespread dismay, have now been partially revised. According to a report by The Athletic, the global football governing body will make approximately 1,000 tickets per match available at a new, lower entry point of $60 for fans of the participating teams. This move comes as a direct response to the vocal negative reaction from supporters worldwide.

The scale of the original pricing issue was starkly illustrated when the Croatian Football Federation published its official price list. It revealed that a ticket for Croatia’s opening match against England was set at $265—a figure reported to be eight times more expensive than comparable tickets for the recent Euro 2024.

The discontent was further amplified by an additional scandal: FIFA’s decision to sell parking passes for vehicles at what many described as exorbitant rates. This added cost served as the latest flashpoint, fueling broader frustration over the commercial approach to the upcoming tournament.
