Sunderland supporters have followed the Africa Cup of Nations closely, with Chemsdine Talbi, Noah Sadiki, Arthur Masuaku, Bertrand Traoré, Reinildo Mandava and Habib Diarra all called up and travelling to Morocco last month. Only Diarra’s Senegal and Talbi’s Morocco remain. Both play semi-finals on Wednesday, Senegal face Mo Salah’s Egypt, Morocco meet Nigeria.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats could consider five standouts from the tournament as they continue to shape a squad aimed at becoming Premier League regulars.
Krepin Diatta, Monaco and Senegal, has been integral to the Lions of Teranga’s run. Naturally a winger but comfortable in several roles, the 26-year-old has maintained high levels throughout. He is out of contract this season and can agree a pre-contract outside France before a summer free move.
Akor Adams, Sevilla and Nigeria, has chipped in with two goals and two assists across the round of 16 win over Mozambique and the victory against Algeria. His Sevilla record is modest, but the 25-year-old could appeal if Sunderland add a striker.
Lassine Sinayoko, Auxerre and Mali, struck three in four before Friday’s 1-0 quarter-final defeat by Senegal. He has six goals and two assists in 16 for Auxerre, and is yet to agree a new deal, so could depart for free this summer.
Ramy Bensebaini, Borussia Dortmund and Algeria, can operate centrally or at left back. With 79 senior appearances, he was part of a back line that conceded just one in four before exiting to Nigeria. He is a regular at Dortmund and has 18 months left.
Hossam Abdelmaguid, Zamalek and Egypt, earned his ninth cap at the tournament. He made three appearances after bench roles in a group win over South Africa and the round of 16 win against Benin, and impressed in a 3-2 quarter-final win over Ivory Coast, whose side included former Sunderland loan star Amad Diallo. He also has 18 months remaining at Zamalek.
