Flamengo’s 3-0 defeat at Palmeiras stalled their surge and restored a seven-point gap at the top. According to Globo.com, the squad reconvened on Sunday intent on moving on while keeping faith in their work.
Optimism remains from strong spells under Leonardo Jardim, and defender Léo Pereira said the group are confident, know what is required and believe the league is long enough to recover.
Captain Giorgian de Arrascaeta, with Uruguay completing clavicle rehab and aiming for the World Cup, offered remote support on social media, writing, “It was a defeat, not the end.”
There were no organised protests after Saturday, yet Carrascal became a target as organised fans visited his residence after a supposed birthday invite leaked.
They did not meet him, and the club will fine him for a third time after his latest dismissal. Colombia are due to confirm their World Cup list on Monday morning, and there is a strong chance he is included.
Some felt Jardim erred by continuing to attack with 10 men, but he retains backing. Two aims are met, the Carioca title and a Libertadores last-16 place, while the Copa do Brasil bid failed and they have not fully reeled in Palmeiras. The World Cup break camp is expected in Portugal, his preference.
On Tuesday Flamengo host Cusco at 21:30 Brasília time, chasing the best group-stage record since 1984, which would secure home advantage in all knockouts. Independiente Rivadavia and Rosario Central, both on 13 points, are competing for that status.
