Flamengo supporters in Teresina, Piauí, transformed a cinema into a terrace to watch "Zico, o Samurai de Quintino", singing and celebrating throughout the screening, according to Globo.com.
The group booked an auditorium in the city’s east zone and staged an exclusive session for fellow rubro-negros. Flags and banners were unfurled to give the room a matchday feel.
One organiser, Augusto César, said they moved quickly once the release date was set, promoted the idea and saw strong take-up, calling the night worthwhile. He added he never saw Zico play, learning about him from family stories and media reports.
Flanáticos, one of Flamengo’s biggest organised groups in Piauí, has its embassy in southeast Teresina and draws hundreds of fans for the Rio club’s games.
Supporter Geovanna Peres said the film left her even more admiring of Zico’s work, both as a player and as a person. She felt it captured how he is revered by the Flamengo faithful and described the occasion as moving.
Widely regarded as Flamengo’s greatest idol, Zico is currently on the big screen across Brazil. The film covers his Flamengo and Brazil years and his spells in Italy and Japan. Directed by João Wainer, it features rare footage and unseen archives, plus contributions from Júnior Maestro, Paulo César Carpegiani, Carlos Alberto Parreira, Ronaldo Fenômeno and broadcaster José Carlos Araújo, alongside family and friends.
