Flamengo have filed a lawsuit seeking R$ 42.7 million from Gerson, now at Cruzeiro, and FGM Sports, the company of his father and agent Marcão. The claim concerns image rights under his final Flamengo deal before his move to Zenit in July 2025.

According to ESPN, the case was lodged last Wednesday in the 25th Civil Court of Rio de Janeiro and is under seal.

The action stems from a long-standing threat made when Zenit considered triggering the midfielder’s release clause. Flamengo’s hierarchy informed the Russian club of a clause tied to image rights in the event of a breach.

A renewal signed in April 2025 for five years included an indemnity to the club if the employment contract was ended unilaterally, equivalent to the remaining balance. Zenit completed his signing three months later, so the amount sought is almost the full value he would have earned.

When confirming his departure, Flamengo said the player had resigned and terminated the deal unilaterally, signalling that legal action could follow. Gerson spent only one semester in Russia before Cruzeiro bought him for 27 million euros plus 3 million in bonuses, making him the costliest signing in Brazilian football history.

As the case is recent, Gerson and his father have not yet been notified and are not commenting.
