Flamengo mocked Botafogo defender Barboza on social media after he was sent off for a foul on Pedro in Saturday’s derby at the Maracanã.

According to Globo.com, a post on the club’s X account labelled him the “smiling centre-back”, adding “Barbosa” in brackets. It said he was dismissed for a foul on P9 on the last line of defence.

The red card arrived at 50 minutes, in first-half stoppage time. Pedro was set to go through on goalkeeper Raul before Barboza pulled him back.

The assistant initially flagged offside. With a potential red card under review, VAR dismissed the offside, Daronco consulted the pitchside screen and sent Barboza off.

Flamengo fans online linked the jibe to a melee in last February’s derby, when Barboza was struck in the mouth and lost a tooth.

He was also dismissed that day, as were then Flamengo players Gerson and Cleiton.
