Flamengo have prioritised left-back for the next window and added Douglas Santos, of Zenit and in Brazil’s World Cup squad, to their shortlist. According to Coluna Do Fla, the club intend to pursue the 32-year-old after the tournament.
The World Cup will be staged in June and July, and Douglas has a Zenit contract running until June 2027.
He has been a regular Brazil call-up since Carlo Ancelotti took charge, and is understudy to Alex Sandro, the Flamengo defender who is also on the World Cup list.
Douglas came through Náutico, moved to Udinese, and later played for Atlético-MG and Hamburg before joining Zenit in July 2019.
Flamengo’s current options at left-back are Alex Sandro as first choice and Ayrton Lucas as back-up, although Ayrton is expected to leave soon. Matías Viña is on loan at River Plate until the end of the year.
While Douglas focuses on a World Cup that begins next Thursday, 11, Flamengo will use the break for a mid-season camp in Portugal in July, where they plan three friendlies in the Algarve.
