Flamengo's win over Cruzeiro at the Maracanã was overshadowed by boos for Gerson and Leonardo Jardim, and post-match disorder. In the South sector, rival fans clashed and some Cruzeiro supporters hurled seats at Flamengo fans below.

Home protests against Jardim began before kick-off. Fake banknotes with his face were handed out and insults greeted his first appearance, then continued during play. This was his first meeting with Cruzeiro since resigning, having said he would pause coaching and only work for the club in Brazil.

There was also attention on a possible encounter with Pedro Lourenço, owner of the Cruzeiro SAF and a business partner of the Portuguese. On the pitch he embraced recent Cruzeiro staff, then met Jardim only inside the dressing room, out of shot.

Before the game, most Cruzeiro players briefly greeted Jardim at the Flamengo bench. Gerson, meanwhile, was booed from warm-up through to full time, labelled a mercenary amid anger at his move to Zenit and rapid return to represent Cruzeiro.

His final months at Flamengo had been strained, with barbs traded and on-off proposals for the then captain. His father and agent, Marcão Silva, accepted the atmosphere could be hostile, and at half-time he was abused in a mixed section, struck by a cup and escorted with relatives to another area as security formed a cordon.

The night also brought Tite back against Flamengo, a side he led in 2024 before a pause. Protests aimed his way were muted.
