Florent Ghisolfi hails Sunderland prospect as Matty Young seals League One loan to Huddersfield | OneFootball

Matty Young has joined Huddersfield Town on loan, stepping up to League One for the first time. According to Sunderland Echo, the Sunderland goalkeeper has completed the move as he continues his senior development.

The 19-year-old made well over 50 senior appearances across two seasons with Salford City. They missed out on promotion on the final day of the regular campaign, then were beaten in the play-offs by Notts County.

Shortly before the play-off final, Young signed a new long-term contract on Wearside running to the summer of 2030. A youth international, he is widely viewed as one of the academy’s brightest prospects.

Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi called the step up a crucial moment in Young’s development. He credited the goalkeeping department for the teenager’s progress and said the club are excited to watch his strides at Huddersfield next season, wishing both well for 2026/27.

Huddersfield director of football Chris Markham described Young as one of the country’s most highly rated keepers and thanked Sunderland for their trust. He said the move, arranged early in pre-season, brings in a player with exceptional experience for his age and the attitude they value.

Head coach Martin Drury said extensive scouting made clear why Young is so highly regarded. He highlighted the goalkeeper’s character and hunger, his desire to play for Town, and plans to work with Sunderland to further his development. Young will work closely with head of goalkeeping Chris Elliott at Canalside to contribute positively next season.
