Sunderland are close to agreeing a long-term contract with 19-year-old goalkeeper Matty Young.
Sunderland Echo understands that talks are advanced, with most terms verbally agreed on a four-year deal plus a 12-month option. It is not complete, and nothing will be final until it is signed.
Young is viewed as a potential future number one, and the club are moving to secure a leading academy graduate under sporting director Florent Ghisolfi.
At Sunderland since the age of seven, Young signed his first professional contract in November 2023. He shone on loan at Darlington, winning their young player of the season, then spent two seasons with Salford City.
He has made 75 league appearances for Salford and 89 senior games overall, and has represented England at under-19, under-20 and under-21 level.
A third stint at Salford next season is considered unlikely. The next step is expected to be a new environment at a larger club with a larger fanbase and stadium, with Plymouth Argyle keen and his move to be carefully chosen to ensure regular, stretching football.
Cardiff City and MK Dons have also been linked. In Sunderland’s goalkeeping group, Robin Roefs is number one, Anthony Patterson is weighing up his future amid interest, and Melker Ellborg is involved.
The anticipated contract would underline long-term planning. Another loan is likely in the short term, with Young seen as having the potential to become an important first-team figure.
