Florent Ghisolfi has a call to make on Jenson Seelt as Sunderland balance squad needs, finances and Europa League registration.
According to Sunderland Echo, Seelt, 23, brings size, athleticism and cover at centre-back and right-back. Yet right-sided options already include Dan Ballard, Nordi Mukiele, Luke O’Nien and Trai Hume, with Lutsharel Geertruida potentially returning.
He has 95 senior appearances, 63 for Jong PSV. Injuries restricted him to 18 Championship outings across two seasons after serious knee damage against Southampton in March 2024, followed by surgery and six to nine months out.
He returned at the start of last season, playing Sunderland’s first two Premier League games and coping well. A loan to Wolfsburg then stalled when a right knee issue in January 2026 curtailed his campaign, leaving nine appearances before a summer return to continue rehab.
Finances matter. With amortisation leaving a book value on his 2023 deal, any sale would be judged against that, while modest fees and wage savings can aid PSR/SCR headroom.
Moving one fringe defender will not transform the budget, but trimming salary and commitments can still help. European depth strengthens his case, although homegrown limits may cap squads at around 22 or 23 senior players.
At right centre-back Ballard is established, at right-back Hume is first choice, with Mukiele, O’Nien and possibly Geertruida providing cover. Sunderland must weigh timing, value and risk, whether to sell, keep if he can stay fit, or seek another loan to rebuild rhythm and protect value.
