Real Madrid are preparing for another major transfer window under Jose Mourinho, but the scale of their investment says as much about FC Barcelona’s recent dominance as it does about their own ambitions.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Florentino Perez is prepared to back Mourinho with an even stronger recruitment drive than he did during the Portuguese coach’s first spell at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2010.

Real Madrid have already strengthened Mourinho’s squad with Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate and Bernardo Silva.

The club appear nowhere near finished, with moves for players such as Manchester City star Rodri and Yan Diomande still under consideration.

Their aggressive approach mirrors the strategy adopted in 2010, when Mourinho arrived alongside signings such as Angel Di Maria, Mesut Ozil, Sami Khedira and Ricardo Carvalho in an attempt to stop Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona.

This time, the backdrop feels familiar. Barcelona have won five of the last six domestic trophies, while Spain’s recent World Cup triumph was once again built around a strong Barca core.

It feels like history repeating itself 16 years later. Meanwhile, Hansi Flick has strengthened his squad with Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi while continuing to rely heavily on La Masia graduates.

A huge compliment for Barcelona

The biggest takeaway is not how much Real Madrid are spending, but why they feel the need to invest so aggressively.

Barcelona have rebuilt their success through smart recruitment, player development and a clear footballing identity. Flick has worked wonders with the squad.

History also offers an interesting reminder. Mourinho’s first Madrid side invested heavily in 2010 to dethrone Guardiola’s Barcelona, yet that season ended with Barca lifting both La Liga and the Champions League.

Transfer fees never decide titles. Mourinho remains one of football’s greatest competitors, and Real Madrid’s squad will undoubtedly improve with further additions.

Even so, nothing changes for Barcelona. When rivals strengthen in an attempt to reach your level, it more often than not means that you are doing something right.

All that matters now is that Flick receives the backing he wants between now and the end of the summer transfer window, and that Barcelona continue to compete on the pitch.
