Kylian Mbappé’s (27) move to Real Madrid two summers ago has worked out for only one party. Paris Saint-Germain lost the Frenchman on a free transfer, but paradoxically, have been the big winners. It has allowed Luis Enrique to complete a more coherent attack and a formidable out-of-possession side. Since Mbappé’s departure, PSG have won the UEFA Champions League in both seasons.
Real Madrid, who welcomed Mbappé on a free transfer, have yet to win any major trophies since his arrival. That is despite the France captain’s exceptional goal-scoring record (42 goals in 44 games last season, and 86 goals in 103 games overall).
Towards the end of the season, with tension mounting at the Bernabeu, Mbappé was even booed by his own fans. It came after he went on holiday with his partner, with the team mired in crisis. However, in comments transcribed by Fabrizio Romano, Florentino Pérez, who is running for re-election as president, has ruled out a departure for the Frenchman.
“Mbappé is one of the best players in the world, and he will not leave,” he began. “You only have to look at his stats and see the magnitude of our player. No one else should doubt such an extraordinary player.”
The elections for Real Madrid president will take place on Sunday.
