The Chilean international didn't have his finest moment on duty for the South Americans
Ben Brereton Diaz is yet to feature for Derby County after making a temporary switch from Southampton, and he will hope his start to life at Pride Park is better than his unfortunate mishaps on international duty with Chile.
The 26-year-old became one of many signings throughout John Eustace's first transfer window in charge in DE24, as the Rams boss looks to mould a squad full of talent and Championship experience with the aim of making firm progress up the second-tier table.
Goalscoring was a major concern for the East Midlands side last term under the former Blackburn Rovers boss and Paul Warne, with Derby ending last season's narrow escape from an immediate return to League One with a tally of just 48 goals across 46 games, with only former loanee Jerry Yates making it into double-figures for the season.
After Football League World exclusively revealed Derby's interest in striking a loan agreement with Southampton for the attacker's services hours before the 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town on August 30th, Brereton Diaz's loan back to the Midlands - after previously coming through the ranks at arch rivals, Nottingham Forest - was confirmed with one day of the recently-closed summer transfer window remaining.
However, as he joins a frontline already possessing the likes of Andreas Weimann, Patrick Agyemang and Carlton Morris, those of a Rams persuasion will be hoping for better things after his performance for Chile against Uruguay in Wednesday's goalless draw in a FIFA World Cup qualifier went viral on social media.
After previously featuring for England at youth level, the Stoke-On-Trent-born attacker switched allegiances to Chile in the summer of 2021, and has since made 35 appearances for 'La Roja' in the past four-and-a-half years, scoring seven times in the process.
This coincided with an extremely strong purple patch he was enjoying with Blackburn Rovers, scoring 36 league goals in two seasons for the East Lancashire side between 2021 and 2023 before leaving for Villareal.
Since then, his form has somewhat regressed, albeit he recorded a steady number of goals and assists for Sheffield United in the second half of last season after a loan move from St Mary's.
Despite only appearing for Saints in the EFL Cup against Northampton Town and Norwich City, Brereton Diaz was called up for Chile's recent World Cup qualifiers against Brazil and Uruguay, although instances of Derby's new loanee missing three guilt-edged chances against the latter have got plenty of Derby and opposition fans talking.
One Rams supporter, whilst hoping this isn't a sign of things to come at Pride Park, ironically believes his association with the club has already had negative implications.
Another Pride Park regular believes that it is a good thing that Morris will likely remain Eustace's option through the middle instead of the Chilean as a result of those missed chances.
Much like some other Rams fans, another wasn't overly surprised to see such developments hit his social media feed.
Unsurprisingly though, the incidents which Brereton Diaz won't want to see anytime soon have already caused plenty of online laughs directed in the way of the East Midlands side.
A Blackburn fan believed that, given his prior form at Ewood Park, all three chances would have found the net had he still been playing for the Lancashire side.
Meanwhile, others are of the opinion that the forward has been over-hyped for quite some time and that he is still living off past glories in front of goal.
Of course, whilst it will be severely frustrating for Brereton Diaz that all three chances went begging, he was still able to put himself about into good attacking positions to forge the opportunities in the first place.
As one of the aforementioned responses mentioned, rather jokingly too, the new signing is unlikely to take Morris' spot as the Rams' focal point, with Derby already playing to his all-round strengths, which has resulted in four goals in as many games for the ex-Luton Town forward.
This could see the new recruit playing just off of Morris alongside his ex-Sheffield United colleague Rhian Brewster, if Eustace persists with his 3-4-2-1 system, although Bobby Clark has also impressed since joining on loan from Liverpool.
There is plenty for Eustace to ponder as a result. However, Brereton Diaz will be hoping to hit the ground running and silence the many critics who have emerged following his misfortune on the international stage.
