Former Inter Milan and AS Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan has opened up on his career choices, what went wrong during his time in Milan, and why he believes his market value would be vastly higher in today’s game.
Speaking in a long interview with Radio Manà Manà Sport, via FCInter1908, Nainggolan first discussed the idea of seeing Francesco Totti return to Roma in a directorial role.
“I speak as his friend and as a neutral person. When you talk about Roma, you talk about Totti,” he said.
“I was at Inter and there Javier Zanetti was vice-president. I don’t understand why the symbol of a club can’t have a role like that. With Totti, the Roma brand would grow again. He’s a football man, he’s been at just one club, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be the right choice.”
Nainggolan then turned to the current level of Serie A, suggesting standards have dropped compared to a decade ago.
“Qualitatively yes, because the quality of Serie A is really low compared to 10–15 years ago. Take Roma today, which is still a good team, which current player would have played in our time? Not to attack anyone, but that’s the level. Someone plays 10 games at Atalanta and becomes a phenomenon. For example, Holm went to Juventus, but he’s not a Juventus-level name like 10 years ago because there isn’t anything better.”

Asked what he would be worth in today’s market, Nainggolan replied bluntly: “150. I went to Inter for 38 million, don’t joke.”
Reflecting on his Nerazzurri spell, he admitted the move never truly felt right off the pitch.
“In the first year with Luciano Spalletti I played every game. You know what it is, it’s another environment, another type of people. Without taking anything away from the quality of life, because Milan is always beautiful. But I like real people, down-to-earth people. I went to local taverns, that’s who I am. I prefer being with family in a restaurant and chatting with fans, I enjoyed that.
“In Milan I didn’t feel at ease. Inter fans always treated me well and I care about Inter because it’s a great club, but a person’s happiness isn’t only football, it’s also what’s outside football, and maybe that was my problem. The first question in my press conference was whether I was happy to have joined Inter. Of course I was happy, but I was more sad to have left Roma.”
