One former Chelsea player has admitted that he feels it is now ‘worrying times’ at the club right now for one main reason.
Chelsea have really fallen off again since Christmas after actually having a good chance to be top of the league right before Christmas.
Since the new year arrived though, it’s been a massive slip up for Enzo Maresca and his Chelsea team. And the terrible January transfer window has not helped them get back on track either.
The transfer window closed a couple of weeks back now and it was a very bland and strange one for Chelsea. They only made one signing and he is a player who is just expected to play as a deep backup option this season and then probably go on loan in the summer.
Other than that, Chelsea just loaned a bunch of players out with the only permanent one being Cesare Casadei to Torino in the end.
Without added personel where the club needed it, they are now hanging on to Champions League qualification by a thread, and former Blue Pat Nevin is really concerned about that.
Pat Nevin speaks on Chelsea.
Nevin is concerned about Chelsea not getting Champions League football this season due to the financial reward and profits that it brings.
He said this week:
“It’s worrying times at Stamford Bridge as financially Chelsea need Champions League football — and they need it soon.”
I also think he is spot on here. Chelsea are still not even playing with a front of shirt sponsor this season, which is nuts. It seems they are waiting to get UCL football so they get bigger and better sponsorship opportunities. So no UCL this season would really screw that up.
