Marcelinho, a former Corinthians attacking midfielder, has announced his retirement from football at 36 after confirming the decision on social media on Friday. The player said in a post that he had ended his professional career.

The farewell reflected on starting out as a five-year-old in Osasco and on realising a dream that had once felt distant, and concluded that his cycle as an athlete had ended.

A graduate of Corinthians’ academy, Marcelinho was the standout of the club’s 2009 Copa São Paulo de Futebol Junior success, finishing as the competition’s top scorer. His displays earned promotion to the first team that same year.

He was part of the squads that lifted the 2009 Campeonato Paulista and the Copa do Brasil. Opportunities were limited, and across 13 appearances he recorded four wins, four draws and five defeats, without a goal or an assist.

After leaving Corinthians, he had spells at Mirassol, Ponte Preta, Ituano and Vila Nova, before ending his career with Rio Branco.
