Feyenoord’s 3-2 home cup defeat to SC Heerenveen was a hugely disappointing result, but perhaps not an unexpected one given the team’s recent form.
Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has now managed Feyenoord on a run involving three wins and eight defeats in their last 11 games in all competitions.
The team have slipped nine points off the pace in the Eredivisie title race, their chances of even reaching the Europa League play-off round are slim at best, and as mentioned, they’re now out of the Dutch cup.

Things had appeared to be going pretty well for van Persie at Feyenoord before this 11-game run.
The team had won 18, drawn two, and lost seven of their first 27 matches under the 42-year-old manager. That’s a decent record, particularly given two of the defeats came to Champions League finalists Inter Milan during van Persie’s first three matches in charge.
But things have taken a severe turn for the worse, and after van Persie jumped the advertising hoardings to speak to the fans on Wednesday night he received an unquestionably angry response from those supporters.

“It’s their right to be angry,” van Persie admitted afterwards. “Immediately after the match, everyone is very emotional. It’s important to get out of that emotional state as quickly as possible, however difficult that may be, because you are rightly disappointed.
“I feel I should stand with the supporters and give them a platform to express their frustration.”
Ahead of the Heereveen clash, there had been media reports suggesting van Persie’s job could be under threat if they lost. That speculation is only set to ramp up now.
