One-time Newcastle United Head of Performance Analysis, Gavin Fleig, has now been appointed at Salford City.
David Ornstein with the exclusive (see below).
Gavin Fleig had been mentioned as an outside chance for the Newcastle United Sporting Director vacancy but has now been appointed as the new Salford City CEO.
It is seen as a real coup for the ambitious League Two club.
Gavin Fleig originally arrived at Newcastle United back in 2007 from Bolton, moving to Tyneside as part of Sam Allardyce’s backroom staff.
Fleig later moved on to work for Manchester City/City Group in a number of roles, most recently as Director of Talent Management and Development Pathways.
Still no news as yet of who will get the Newcastle United Sporting Director’s role.
However, Monday morning did bring an official NUFC announcement, stating that Jack Ross is now the club’s Head of Strategy and will report to the new Sporting Director when that role is eventually filled.
David Ornstein exclusive for The Athletic – 14 July 2025:
‘Salford City have appointed City Football Group (CFG) executive Gavin Fleig as their new CEO.
Fleig’s arrival comes after a lengthy recruitment process including multiple candidates and follows Sir David Beckham and Gary Neville’s takeover of the League Two club, as part of a new consortium, back in May.
The 45-year-old Englishman brings with him a wealth of experience after two decades working across the game, and the past 11 at CFG where he was responsible for overseeing talent strategy and player development pathways across their global network of clubs.
He previously spent time at Manchester City, Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers in various performance analysis and scouting roles.
