The 2026 FIFA World Cup is just a few weeks away. The official roster for the United States men's national team is set to be released on Tuesday afternoon. However, The Guardian got a hold of the 26-man roster and released it before the USMNT was able to do so. As such, New York City FC fans already know that Matt Freese will be going to the World Cup. But there is also another familiar face.
Joe Scally, a former Homegrown player for the club, is also a part of the World Cup roster. The former NYCFC player and New York native will represent the area on the world stage. More specifically, he will represent Lake Grove out on Long Island as he tries to play as much as possible. He will also represent his current club, Borussia Verein für Leibesübungen 1900 e.V. Mönchengladbach, or as it is known, Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Unlike Freese, this is not Scally's first World Cup. He went to the 2022 tournament in Qatar, but did not make an appearance. This time, the defender will want to play for the USMNT. Alas, the former NYCFC player will likely not start, as there are other players ahead of him in the depth chart.
Sergiño Dest and Alex Freeman are arguably both ahead of Scally when it comes to his natural position as a right-back. Then, while he can play the left-back position, he is undoubtedly behind Antonee Robinson. Then, in the eyes of Mauricio Pochettino, he might be behind Max Arfsten as well, despite the fact that the Columbus Crew player is not a natural defender. He has been viewed that way, though, with the USMNT.
Still, with more experience under his belt, Scally will hopefully see the pitch a little bit. If he does, then he will make Long Island, the New York tri-state area, and NYCFC fans very proud. It is always great to see local players earn the honor of playing for the USMNT, especially in the World Cup.
Meanwhile, the right-back is not the only one with NYCFC connections that will be on the roster. Gio Reyna, who played with the club's academy and is a current teammate of Scally, has also been called up to represent the Stars and Stripes. This was slightly surprising since he is struggling with his club play. At the same time, Reyna has done well for the USMNT, so that can be a big reason why.
In the end, the USMNT will have those connected with NYCFC at the World Cup. Of course, it must be said that nothing is official. If there are sudden changes, then this will be updated.
