FPL GW5 Best Captain: Haaland, Salah, Palmer & More

Artikelbild:FPL GW5 Best Captain: Haaland, Salah, Palmer & More

As we go in search of the FPL GW5 Best Captain,, we look at the newly signed transfers beginning to bed into their new teams, and the league is beginning to take shape, with last year’s Champions Liverpool remaining unbeaten after yet another late goal to secure all 3 points at newly promoted Burnley. Arsenal are also showing strong signs of a title challenge this season after a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Nottingham Forest; this weekend they will welcome Pep Guardiola’s Man City to the Emirates in what is a huge match in the landscape of this season’s title race.

Guardiola’s side had a convincing win over their Manchester rivals as they came out on top 3-0 with Erling Haaland bagging 2 goals as the Norwegian striker seemingly enters top form. Haaland is now just one goal away from being the Manchester derby’s all-time top scorer, as he matched Wayne Rooney’s record. United continue to flatter to deceive as manager Ruben Amiron stubbornly sticks to his way of playing despite results consistently going against the Red Devils.

Let’s take a closer look at the standout options and which players could give you the edge ahead of GW5.

FPL GW5 Best Captain Options: The Usual Suspects

Erling Haaland – Man City (FWD £14.1m)

The Norwegian striker looks to be approaching his best form, as he took advantage of United’s shaky defence as he helped himself to 2 goals in last weekend’s Manchester Derby.

Last season can be classed as an “off-season” for the 25-year-old, as he only hit the net 22 times in the league as they limped to a 3rd place finish, 13 points behind Champions Liverpool.

This weekend he prepares to face fellow title challengers Arsenal; he has scored in the last 2 appearances against the Gunners, which will give him confidence but they have not conceded a goal from open play yet this season, an example of how solid Mikel Arteta’s side’s defence has been this season. Remarkedly, they have conceded just one goal across all competitions this season… And it was that Dominik Szoboszlai free kick.

It’s another chance for him to renew his rivalry with centre-back Gabriel.

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (MID £14.5m)

He has yet to hit the form we are so used to but there were glimpses that the Egyptian may be returning to somewhere near his best during the Reds’ Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid in midweek. Last time out he came up against a stubborn Burnley side but deep into injury time he finally got his opportunity, which he buried from the spot.

This weekend, the Reds welcome their close rivals Everton to Anfield and wouldn’t David Moyes and co. love if they were the first team to take points off the champions this season? With 10 goal contributions in 13 appearances in the Merseyside derby, it’s a fixture the 33-year-old relishes and who says Saturday won’t be the same? Our resident Machiavellian Dylan McBennett thinks they’ll liverpool will win the league, invincible. Let’s see if Everton ruins that for him before the chatter even begins.

Cole Palmer – Chelsea (MID £10.4m)

Chelsea’s talisman was unable to start last weekend’s clash with fellow Londoners Brentford due to injury but was only on the pitch 5 minutes when he stamped his authority on proceedings by hitting the net in the 61st minute. The Blues went on to draw the match but the influence of Palmer was clear to see.

He also created some moments of magic in their midweek defeat away to Bayern Munich. The 23-year-old got on the scoresheet just before the half-hour mark with an impressive finish and continued to be a thorn in the Germans’ side all night.

Having gone through a phase where he struggled to impact games at the end of last season, it looks like the England International is coming close to reaching his best form once again and a trip to Old Trafford to face a fragile United side this weekend will only excite Palmer.

FPL GW5 Best Captain Options: The Alternate Pick

Alex Iwobi – Fulham (£6.5m)

  1. Opponent: Brentford (H)

The Nigerian International may not be the flashiest, most extravagant player but he is crucial in how Marco Silva sets up his Fulham team.

The hard-working former Arsenal man is under pressure to perform after new signing Kevin impressed on the wing last weekend but provides a different threat to opposition defences than the young Brazilian.

Coupled with the fact he is playing for his place, we feel it is a great opportunity to trust the 29-year-old with the captain’s armband this weekend.
