France will wear their green, Statue of Liberty-inspired strip for Thursday’s World Cup quarter-final against Morocco at 22:00.

According to L'Équipe, despite being the designated home team, the staff have opted for the away shirt. The design echoes the statue’s colour and nods to the monument gifted by France to the United States in 1876. It has proved popular with French supporters.

France also wore it in the third group match against Norway, winning 4-1. Morocco will play in their usual red and green.

In their four other World Cup matches, against Senegal, Iraq, Sweden and Paraguay, France used the home kit.

Before this tournament, France had never voluntarily played in colours other than blue, white and red. At the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, an error by the French kitman meant organisers supplied green shirts from an amateur club in Mar del Plata for one match.
