Franck Ribéry, capped 81 times by France with 16 goals, has rejected allegations contained in a document within the Jeffrey Epstein files and plans to bring criminal proceedings.

According to Le Progres, the ex-Metz, Marseille and Bayern Munich forward is named in an anonymised 2019 document found among files on the convicted US sex offender released by the US Department of Justice.

The 38-page letter lists numerous names and asserts that Ribéry belonged to the world of prostitution, and alleges he tried to strike a woman at her home after obtaining her address.

Ribéry, 42, denies all of it, describing the letter as fanciful and the product of a dispute between others. He intends to pursue the signatory, whom he says he has identified, as well as those repeating the claims on social media.

He was questioned in Paris in 2010 as a witness in a case of aggravated pimping.

He argues that freedom of expression does not justify spreading false or defamatory material, and says his family has felt the impact. The appearance of a name in the Epstein files does not in itself imply wrongdoing, yet many public figures have faced the fallout.
