Franco Baresi’s funeral was held in Milan on Tuesday, a week after the AC Milan and Italy icon died aged 66. Figures from across the Rossoneri and Italian football attended.

The city flag flew at half-mast at Palazzo Marino on the day. According to L'Équipe, the service was held at the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio.

Paolo Maldini, Fabio Capello, Clarence Seedorf, Alessandro Costacurta, Mauro Tassotti, Massimo Ambrosini, Marco Van Basten, Roberto Baggio and Dida were among those present. Daniele Massaro held a commemorative replica of Baresi’s captain’s armband alongside Dejan Savicevic.

AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni and RedBird founder and club majority shareholder Gerry Cardinale attended, as did current players Christian Pulisic and Santiago Gimenez. Supporters gathered outside the basilica to watch the coffin pass, with a banner describing Baresi as an immortal legend.

A wreath carried a message from AC Milan to their captain, for ever. His coffin was flanked by Italy and Milan shirts bearing his name and number six.

After the service, the coffin was carried by Ambrosini and Costacurta among others. Claudio Ranieri was visibly moved.
