Coventry City extended their lead at the top of the table with a win over Sheffield United
Coventry City extended their lead at the top of the Championship to four points with a 3-1 victory over Sheffield United.
Frank Lampard’s side have emerged as the second-tier’s standout package during the first third of the campaign, blowing opposition teams away with their attacking prowess.
The Sky Blues have netted a whopping 39 times during their first 14 league matches, which is by far the division’s highest total. Hull City’s figure of 23 is next in line, highlighting just how strong Coventry have been offensively when compared to the rest of the Championship.
Coventry now have five points over Middlesbrough in third place, which means that they are already starting to build a crucial automatic promotion buffer. Although the CBS Arena outfit extended their lead at the top of the table with a win against Sheffield United, that didn’t always look on the cards during the encounter.

Coventry came into the clash looking to bounce back from their shock defeat away at Wrexham, which marked the first time that they had been bested all season.
However, it looked like the Sky Blues could be in for double the agony, after Sam McCallum’s opener saw Sheffield United take a one-goal lead into the break.
Coventry could’ve let the pressure get to them and crumbled, but instead came out swinging in the fashion of true champions to overturn the deficit and claim an important 3-1 victory.
Goals from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Bobby Thomas and Brandon Thomas-Asante were too much for Chris Wilder’s side to take, and a sharp contrast to the lack of output Lampard’s men managed in the first 45.
Speaking after the game to the Coventry Telegraph, the Sky Blues’ boss opened up on what he said to the players at half-time to spark such a turnaround and how it reflects upon their season as a whole.
“We made little tactical tweaks,” stated Lampard. “But the main tweak was our approach to the game and how fast we were and how much pressure we put on them. And that obviously changed the whole course of the match. It’s always the message,”
“It’s what we want to become, if we want to have success this season it has to be off that. If you look at our big performances this year have been that.
“When we’ve blown teams away, which fortunately we have at times, it’s been more power, pace, play forward, run forward, support each other and move forward and we do that a lot.”

After suffering the heartbreak of play-off semi-final defeat last season, it wasn’t certain how Lampard’s side would react in the new term.
With the likes of Ipswich Town and Leicester City back in the division, a title battle wasn’t really something the Sky Blues were ever touted for.
However, Lampard’s side have established themselves as the team to beat in the Championship at this moment in time and look to enjoy the ability to score multiple goals whenever they enter a football pitch.
In their current state, Coventry look almost impossible to stop and hopes of promotion to the Premier League must be starting to build around the CBS Arena.
