Bayern Munich extended their winning streak to 12 games as the Frauen-Bundesliga is back from a winter break that lasted for one month. However, including Wolfsburg’s trip to bottom-placed Carl Zeiss Jena, two matches had to be rescheduled to later dates.

Snowy win for Bayern

The defending champions started where they left off with a 3-0 win over RB Leipzig in their first game of the new year. José Barcala’s side extended the winning streak to 12 matches as they only dropped points in the surprise goalless draw on matchday 3 at home against Carl Zeiss Jena.

Sunday’s win was one of the toughest in this invincible run, but it wasn’t because of Leipzig’s display. It was rather due to the difficult weather with the heavy snow making things difficult for both teams at Bayern Campus.

Momoko Tanikawa puts the hosts ahead early in the game after Bayern were awarded a penalty-kick for handball. Two scrappy goals sealed the win for the league leaders after the restart. Kyra Spitzner scored an own-goal five minutes after coming on as a substitute before Jovana Damnjanovic finally succeeded in her search for a first home goal of the season.

Ivorian international Bernadette Amani made her Bayern debut in the second half, but Edna Imade was an unused substitute after being recalled from her loan spell at Real Sociedad. Bayern’s next three games are away from home before they host second-placed Wolfsburg on February 22nd.

Adverse weather conditions impact more fixtures

Wolfsburg will also face a two-legged Champions League playoff tie against Juventus in February, but they will now have to wait until next Monday’s game versus Köln for their return to action in the Frauen-Bundesliga.

Both Wolfsburg’s game in Jena and Eintracht Frankfurt’s home match against Hoffenheim have been postponed because of weather conditions and unplayable pitches. The latter is rescheduled for the first midweek of February, but Wolfsburg will have a game in hand until mid-March.

Ten-player Leverkusen secure comeback win

Neighbours Bayer Leverkusen and Köln used this opportunity to climb to the top six in the standings. Leverkusen were a goal and a player down at Union Berlin before they scored twice in the last 15 minutes. Substitute Kristin Kogel netted the injury-time winner as they’re now level on points with fourth-placed Hoffenheim.

In contrast, Köln faced a Freiburg side that finished the game with ten women. Martyna Wiankowska’s first half penalty-kick secured a back-to-back 1-0 win for the hosts.

Meanwhile, Sophie Hillebrand completed her brace in injury-time as Hamburg stole all three points at the death in a relegation six-pointer against SGS Essen. Third-placed Werder Bremen missed the chance to narrow the gap with Wolfsburg to five points as they were held at home to a 1-1 draw with Nürnberg.
