27 goals were scored in the seventh matchday of the Frauen-Bundesliga, with three clubs scoring more than half of the goals.
Bayern went behind inside the first five minutes at home against Köln when Sandra Jessen became the first opposing player to score against them in the Frauen-Bundesliga this season. However, the champions roared back with a 5-1 win as they scored four after the break.
Momoko Tanikawa started the comeback with a beautiful strike deep in first-half injury-time. The Japanese midfielder was subbed on earlier than expected when Lena Oberdorf suffered yet another injury setback.
The 2022 Euros star returned to the pitch after a couple of years, but it’s feared now that she sustained another ACL injury to the same knee. Like in the men’s game, ACL injuries are occurring a lot with Arsenal’s goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger the latest to be added to the list earlier this week.
Center-backs Magdalena Eriksson and Stine Ballisager scored for Bayern after the restart. Meanwhile, Georgia Stanway maintained her excellent form with a goal and an assist. Pernille Harder also scored her first league goal of the season from a penalty spot in the 84th minute.
Bayer Leverkusen were level on points with Wolfsburg at the start of their head-to-head fixture, but they were reduced to ten only after 30 seconds. Goalkeeper Charlotte Voll left her box to foul Lineth Beerensteyn in what decided the tie before it properly started.
Including a goal that could be compared to Nick Woltemade’s strike against Brighton, Alexandra Popp scored a first-half brace. Beerensteyn netted her fifth goal of the season before another Leverkusen player got sent off early in the second-half. The visitors ended up winning 5-1 with Leverkusen’s Claudia Wenger scoring on both ends.
Union Berlin have been a welcome addition to the league this season, and they secured their biggest win of the campaign with a 5-0 victory over RB Leipzig. Lisa Heiseler, who scored their first-ever Bundesliga goal in a 1-1 draw with Nürnberg, scored a first-half brace.
Austrian international Eileen Campbell also had a memorable night with a goal and two assists. Once again, over 20,000 fans attended the game at Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
With Leverkusen and Freiburg losing this weekend, TSG Hoffenheim took advantage to climb to third in the standings with a narrow win away at cellar-dwellers SGS Essen. The hosts had a great chance to open the scoring inside the first minute, but Ramona Maier missed an open goal.
The league’s top-scorer, Selina Cerci, didn’t make that mistake when she scored the winner five minutes later from close range. The German striker leads the scoring chart with six goals.
Elsewhere, Nürnberg recorded the surprise result of the matchday with a 3-2 victory over Freiburg. Both teams scored own-goals as Nürnberg climbed to ninth place with nine points.
The other newly-promoted side Hamburg only mustered a draw at home against relegation-threatened Carl Zeiss Jena. Both goals were scored by substitutes in the last 15 minutes. Frankfurt, who are competing in the UEFA Europa Cup, return to winning ways with two first-half goals at home against Werder Bremen.
After the international break, Frauen-Bundesliga will return with Bayern and Wolfsburg playing at home against Essen and Hoffenheim, respectively. Germany will face France in the two-legged Women’s Nations League semi-final tie on October 24th and 28th.
