Freiburg conflicted on sending rising Swiss prospect Bruno Ogbus to the 2. Bundesliga on loan

As the January 2026 Bundesliga transfer window rolls on, the question of whether or not exciting young Swiss defensive prospect Bruno Ogbus of SC Freiburg will be loaned out remains a highly intriguing question. Several 2. Bundesliga outlets were clamoring for the 20-year-old’s services. A loan out to German second division side 1. FC Kaiserslautern appeared a done deal, until an injury to Freiburg starting centre-back Philipp Lienhart forced Ogbus in the SCF XI.

Freiburg head coach Julian Schuster recently praised Ogbus directly at an early January press conference. Schuster opted to pair Ogbus with highly experienced veteran defensive mentor Anthony Jung against RB Leipzig last night. Despite the fact that Freiburg conceded two goals in the 2-0 away loss, Jung and Schuster both praised Ogbus’ performance.

Jung and Schuster on Bruno Ogbus:

Bruno handled matters very calmly and very solidly,” Jung said of the central defensive partner 14 years his junior when speaking in the mixed zone. “He did very well. I would gladly play by his side once again.

That was very well done from Tony and Bruno,” Schuster added at the post-match press conference. “They played together for the first time against a very tough opponent.

We won’t pressured [into a loan deal],” Schuster continued. “We will look carefully both at what’s right for us as a club and the individual players. We always want players to get their chances.”

Schuster’s earlier statement on Ogbus:

He is a highly talented young man for whom we have high hopes,” Schuster remarked on January 9th. “It’s been really gratifying to watch Bruno work his way back from injury. He hasn’t missed a day and continues to fight for playing time.

Will Ogbus be loaned out?

At the beginning of the current January window, it seemed a certainty that Freiburg would park their prospect in the 2. Bundesliga. Ogbus still might be moved as centre-backs Mattias Ginter is only out for a short time with gastrointestinal issues and Liehart might be back soon after healing from an abdominal strain.

German central defender Max Rosenfelder has also been struggling with various injuries this year, but should be back before too long following his latest December set-back. Schuster has enough centre-backs on his squad.

Something speaking against an Ogbus loan, though it may be slightly superstitious, concerns the fact that Freiburg have had to re-park two of their loanees this month. Freiburg moved midfielder Robert Wagner from Holstein Kiel to Dynamo Dresden on January 3rd.

A few days after that, Freiburg terminated winger Noah Weißhaupt’s Legia Warsaw loan early and sent the 24-year-old to Jörg Schmadtke’s Hannover 96 in the 2. Bundesliga. The Breisgauer will surely give a lot of thought to where Ogbus should go next.
