Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has committed his future to the club by signing a new contract that will keep him at the Camp Nou until 2029.
The Dutchman’s previous deal was due to expire in 2026, but the extension signals a major show of faith from both player and club.
De Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax for €86 million in 2019 and has since made 267 appearances, winning two La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies and two Spanish Super Cups.
The 28-year-old remains one of the club’s highest earners, having deferred parts of his salary during the COVID-19 pandemic to ease financial pressure on the club.
Tensions over that contract once brought him close to an exit, with Barcelona attempting to sell him to Manchester United in 2022 to raise funds. De Jong resisted the move.
That decision has been vindicated under manager Hansi Flick, who has made the midfielder a central figure in his plans since taking charge last year.
“My dream was always to play for Barca,” De Jong said. “Now that I’m here, I want this dream to continue for many more years.”
Negotiations for the new deal began earlier this year and progressed smoothly after the player switched agents, which improved communication between the parties.
Flick’s arrival was also influential, with De Jong describing their relationship as ‘very good’ and crediting him for showing faith in his abilities.
The midfielder played a key role in Barcelona’s title-winning campaign last season, featuring 46 times in all competitions despite missing the opening weeks through injury.
His calm presence in midfield, combined with his growing chemistry alongside Pedri and Gavi, has reinforced his importance to Flick’s squad.
De Jong is now the second-highest appearance maker among Dutch players in Barcelona’s history, trailing only Phillip Cocu.
