West Brom are interested in Southampton striker Cameron Archer as they look to bolster James Morrison's squad ahead of the new season.

West Brom have had a productive start to the transfer window as they look ahead to a first full season under James Morrison.

After the appointments of Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay spectacularly backfired, the Albion hierarchy turned to the former player to keep the club in the Championship last season.

Under Morrison, the Baggies were transformed, as he simplified the approach and made the team hard to beat, as they collected 18 points from his 12 games to ensure they stayed in the league.

Therefore, it came as no surprise when owner Shilen Patel named Morrison as the permanent head coach, with attention now turning to improving the squad, and with Matt Ingram, Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Barney Stewart through the door, Albion have done some decent business.

West Brom keen on Southampton striker Cameron Archer

Even though Morgan and Stewart have increased Albion’s options in attack, it’s still an area of the pitch that Morrison is looking to add to in the window.

And, TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has revealed that Southampton’s Cameron Archer is of interest to the Baggies.

The 24-year-old has had a difficult few years on the south coast, having initially joined Saints when they were a Premier League club in 2024, but he managed just two goals in his first season.

However, things didn’t get much better for Archer in the Championship, as he found the net just four times in 30 appearances last season, although many of those outings were from the bench.

So, Southampton may be open to letting Archer leave if a suitable offer arrives, with the former Aston Villa man under contract at St. Mary’s Stadium for another two years.

Cameron Archer could benefit from a fresh start at West Brom

Archer was very highly-rated when he came through the ranks at Villa, and two very impressive loan spells at Preston and Middlesbrough in the second tier showed what he is all about.

The England youth international was particularly impressive at Boro, where he scored 11 goals and registered six assists in 22 games after joining in January 2023.

Yet, a move to Sheffield United in the Premier League just didn’t work out, and, as outlined above, he has struggled at Southampton.

With that in mind, a fresh start would make sense for the player, and the chance to join West Brom, where he may play every week, could be exactly what he needs.

At 24, it’s far too soon to write Archer off, and many will remember just how sharp and dangerous he looked during his time with North End and Boro.

Morrison has already improved plenty of individuals at West Brom, and it would be no surprise if he could do similar with Archer, and the prospect of the Saints man linking up with Stewart is a very exciting one for the Baggies, as they have a range of attributes as a partnership.

Whether this deal is realistic from a financial perspective remains to be seen, and there will be some who question Archer’s form in the past few years.

But, for the right price, it could be a gamble worth taking for West Brom, and, if things did work out, Archer could become a key player at The Hawthorns as Albion look to benefit from the new play-off format and push for a top eight finish under Morrison.
