Josh Windass has remained on the Light Blues' radar at the start of the transfer window

Scottish Premiership giants Rangers are continuing to push for a transfer that would see the Glasgow outfit reunite with former forward, Josh Windass, who, in turn, would once again link-up with his previous Sheffield Wednesday boss, Danny Rohl.

That is according to a report from the Daily Mail which emerged late on New Year's Day, hours after the Red Dragons made it three wins on the bounce in the Championship with a controlled 2-0 success and performance to down Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

A strong run of recent form has put the North Wales side firmly back in the mix when it comes to play-off contention amid the now-opened winter transfer window, in which activity at the Stok Cae Ras will be set to generate plenty of headlines as a result of the club's well-documented backing from Hollywood acting duo, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

Phil Parkinson was able to transform his squad in the summer ahead of Wrexham's first campaign at second tier level in 43 years with a record-breaking transfer window, where approximately £30m was spent on a raft of new signings, whilst the club also posted a greater overall net spend than the likes of last season's UEFA Champions League finalists, Inter Milan.

Despite boasting a wealth of Championship experience himself, Windass did not arrive as a high-profile signing in terms of the sum of money parted with to secure his services, eventually moving to last season's League One runners-up on a free transfer after exiting the aforementioned Owls due to a dispute over continuously delayed wage payments in the final months of Dejphon Chansiri's controversial 10-year spell as owner in South Yorkshire.

Yet, despite only moving to Wales a handful of months ago, the Hull-born forward's immediate future has been plunged into doubt over the hectic Christmas and New Year period, with his former Wednesday boss looking to make the requisite changes in order to transform Rangers' fortunes.

As previously mentioned, Windass knows all about the size and stature of the Ibrox club, having featured 73 times for the Light Blues between 2016 and 2018, scoring 19 times and posting a further 13 assists.

The 31-year-old has become one of the most experienced figures in Wrexham's new-look side instantly, and it was hoped he would become an integral figure in terms of goal contributions after marking his debut with a goal from the penalty spot against Southampton.

Despite only being at the club for just short of six months, Windass has already captained the Red Dragons on five occasions, with all of those coming in successive outings between September 20th and October 18th.

He has made 19 league appearances for his new employers thus far, with 13 of those coming from the starting lineup, whilst scoring six times and providing a further three assists in the process.

Yet, despite missing the past three outings with a calf injury, although he may return for the upcoming trip to Derby County on Sunday afternoon, Windass has already become the subject of exit talk.

It was initially claimed by Ben Jacobs of Give Me Sport on December 23rd that Rohl was eyeing up a potential reunion with his former Hillsborough colleague in his maiden transfer window in charge of Rangers.

The report claimed that the most likely avenue to a departure for the playmaker would be on a loan basis, although Wrexham would be reluctant to sanction such a move.

However, just hours into the winter window, it has since been claimed that the side who currently reside in third in the SPFL, six points behind leaders Hearts, are still exploring a reunion for their former player.

The report backs up the fact Wrexham have no intention of agreeing a move unless a loan fee is paid, whilst a permanent move is even less likely to be struck due to the size of the Light Blues' wage bill.

Wrexham AFC will hope Josh Windass ignores double reunion factor amid Rangers FC links

With there being two double reunion factors at play in this saga, some will believe that Windass' head could be easily turned. However, given Wrexham's current league standing and their own ambitions, it is nowhere near as straightforward as that.

He previously described Rohl as "the best coach I've ever had by far," in an interview in January 2024, with the former Bayern Munich coach able to get the best out of the forward in S6 as he netted 13 times in their only full season together in the Steel City after initially guiding the Owls to a great escape the previous season.

At present, though, the man who is ESTIMATED to be earning £15,000 per week in North Wales will be fully committed to extending Parkinson's side's run to a potential fourth game as they look to close in on the top six ahead of an FA Cup clash with Nottingham Forest.
